Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (2024)

Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (1)

If you create a document that you want to use again as a model for other documents, you can save it as a template. Creating your own template can be as simple as adding your company logo to an existing template, or you can design a completely new template.

You can add your custom templates to the templatechooser, save them as a file to share with others, and use them in Pages on your Mac or iPhone. Custom templates that you create on your iPad are grouped in the My Templates category of the template chooser and are shared across all your devices.

Save a document as a template

If you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on all your devices and have iCloud Drive turned on when you save your custom template, it’s available on all your devices (but not in Pages for iCloud).

  1. Tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (2), tap Export, then tap Pages Template.

  2. Tap an option:

    • Add to Template Chooser: Your template appears in the My Templates category in the template chooser.

    • Send Template: Choose where you want to send your template, or save it to Files.

If you add your custom template to the template chooser, you can still share it later. Just touch and hold the template thumbnail in the template chooser, lift your finger, then tap Share. If the Share option isn’t available, you may need to download the template to your device.

Install a template from another source on your device

You can install a custom template that you received as an attachment by adding it to the template chooser in Pages.

Note: The template is already installed on all your devices and available in the My Templates category of the template chooser if you chose Add to Template Chooser when you created the template (and were using iCloud Drive with the same Apple ID).

On your device, do the following to install a template from these sources:

  • AirDrop: Make sure AirDrop is turned on. When the AirDrop message appears, tap Accept, then tap Add.

  • An email: In Mail, tap the attachment, then tap the screen. Tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (3) at the top of the screen, tap Open in Pages, then tap Add.

  • iCloud: Open Pages, and if a document is already open, tap Documents at the top of the screen to see all your documents. Tap Browse at the bottom of the screen to see the Locations list on the left, then tap where you want to install the template (iCloudDrive or OnMyiPad). Tap the template, then tap Add.

Edit a custom template

  1. Open Pages, then in the documentmanager, tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (4), and then tap the custom template you want to edit.

If a document is open, tap Documents or Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (5) in the top-left corner to go to the document manager.

Custom templates appear in the My Templates category in the template chooser. If you want to use a custom template that doesn’t appear there, you must first install the custom template (see the instructions above).

  2. Make your changes, tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (6), tap Export, then tap Pages Template.

  3. Tap an option:

    • Add to Template Chooser: Your template appears in the My Templates category in the template chooser.

    • Send Template: Choose where you want to send your template, or save it to Files.

The edited template is saved as a new version. You can rename the new version and delete the first version if you don’t want to keep it.

Rename a custom template

If you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on all your devices and have iCloud Drive turned on, renaming a custom template renames it on all your devices.

  1. Open Pages, and if a document is open, tap Documents in the top-left corner to see all your documents.

  2. Tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (7) to open the template chooser.

  3. Tap the My Templates category near the top of the screen (the last category on the right).

  4. Touch and hold the template thumbnail, lift your finger, then tap Rename.

  5. Type a new name.

To quickly delete the current name, tap the “x” in the text field.

  6. Tap Back to return to the template chooser.

Delete a custom template

If you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on all your devices and have iCloud Drive turned on, deleting a custom template deletes it from all your devices.

  1. Open Pages, and if a document is already open, tap Documents in the top-left corner to see all your documents.

  2. Tap Create and manage Pages templates on iPad (8) to open the template chooser.

  3. Tap the My Templates category near the top of the screen (the last category on the right).

  4. Touch and hold the template thumbnail, lift your finger, then tap Delete.

  5. Tap Delete to confirm, or tap Cancel.
